The opening theme song to the tv show, “Cheers” kind of describes Friction CrossFit, in my opinion. Those of us (the few us) over the age of 30 may remember the lyrics – “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came…”
This is the pervasive sentiment at Friction.
I started at Friction CrossFit about 2 and a half years ago. Although I had been an athlete in high school (state champion in shot-put), I had only worked out intermittently since then. I would go to a gym to do cardio and weight machines for a couple of months at a time but then stop.
Frankly, I was bored and wasn’t getting the results that I wanted. But then I found out about CrossFit
I was fascinated with the idea of fitness as a sport. I watched the CrossFit Games and was inspired but also intimidated. Nonetheless, I researched local boxes and came across Friction.
After the first few days, I was hooked. I pushed myself to do things that I never imagined; and I was doing it alongside people who were also giving 100% in every workout. I felt like I had found my thing. I continued for a while but started slacking off and going to the box once a week, if that.
So Bobby, being the awesome, perceptive coach he is, suggested doing PT with him and focusing on weightlifting as he’d noticed that the strength part of the workout was my favorite.
For the last year and a half, I’ve been doing PT with Bobby. I have gained so much strength and skill as a weightlifter and all-around athlete. My progress has not just been physical. Not only have I learned to sit, stand, walk, and lift properly, Bobby and I have had sessions where we spend the majority of the time talking about motivation, consistency, staying mentally focused, and self-care.
As a result, I have learned to love “the work”.
Being surrounded by others at Friction who are also putting in work and making gains, is what makes it awesome.
And even though I don’t participate in classes, work out alone most of the time, and always have my headphones on, being in a place where athletes (beginners and advanced) are working their butts off is comforting and motivating; walking in and bumping fists with members and hitting the coaches with a head nod and a “whaddup, Coach” has become part of my workout routine – a routine I wouldn’t want to do anywhere else.
